Meet The Band
Jenni & David and the Sweet Soul Band
Hey, some things are meant to be...David moved to Humboldt County in December of 2010 and shortly thereafter joined the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir. Jenni had been a member of the choir since 2008, noticed him at choir rehearsal and when she saw David at the Monday night open mic at Curley's Bar & Grill a few days later she introduced herself. They began rehearsing in Jenni's living room in May of 2011 and after about a month began performing as a duo at local restaurants and fairs. Early on they decided they would play as a duo until the right players came along, and they have...
Jenni Simpson: Vocals and bari sax
Jenni grew up in Oakland, CA surrounded by an amazingly varied tapestry of music. Big band, bluegrass and ragtime from her father; gospel and classical from her mother; funk, soul, R&B, modern rock and blues from the radio, friends, and the local record stores. Jenni began playing saxophone when she was 10 and continued to play through high school and college. She always enjoyed singing - in the church choir, along with radio, but when she attended a Bonnie Raitt concert at 18 her life changed and she knew she had to sing. Since that time she has been committed to expressing herself vocally and began writing and performing many of her own songs in 2006.
David Childers: Guitars and vocals
David began playing folk and bluegrass at age 17, evolved through folk blues and rock and roll and in 1969 was turned on to King Curtis and Memphis R&B. His influences include King Curtis, BB King, James Brown, The Meters, Chuck Berry, Litlle Richard. Ry Cooder, Maceo Parker to name just a few. David's philosophy is that the "groove" is paramount and everything else is frosting. He plays guitar and occasionally lap steel as well as handling the vocals along with Jenni.
Julie Froblom: Saxophone and vocals
A versatile performer, Julie has performed and recorded extensively in Northern California and abroad. Her background includes playing in several types of ensembles including classical, chamber ensembles, swing bands, pit orchestras, jazz ensembles, alternative music, as well as Bluesy, funky, soulful contemporary bands. She doubles on four types of saxophones as well as being a competent flute player. She holds a B.A. in music from Humboldt State University.
Justin Hobart Brown: Bass guitar
A Humboldt County native, Justin has a broad musical past that includes, rock, punk, funk and latin. Along with bass he has also been known to rip it up on the drums and guitar. Justin's been playing bass since he joined his first band at the age of 15. Justin recorded and toured with Kendra Smith on her "Five Ways of Disappearing" album and national tour for 4ad Records. Justin's a song writer, singer and mixed materials artist too. You'll see him sketching and drawing frequently almost everywhere.
Robert Demers: Drums
Robert is the newest addition to the group, he fits in well with our desire to be in the groove. He enjoys playing with the great musicians in the Sweet Soul Band.
Robert Franklin: Guitar
Newest member of the band... Robert "Swamp Thang" Franklin has been active in the Humboldt music since the late 1970s. He was born in Los Angeles, California, where his musical imagination was fueled by a mosaic of styles including: Mexican traditional, Lebanese percussion, and Bakersfield country & western before picking up a guitar as a teenager amidst the British Invasion. He soon encountered blues, r&b and jazz by crossing to the "wrong side" of town.
